The days snowed in together turned into more than a week, then more than two. The snow finally stopped and had started to melt a little. The date drew nearer to Christmas and even though I hated to see her go, I knew Vanessa had to get home to her family for the holiday.

I went for an early morning run before Vanessa woke, and when I shifted, I heard a voice in my head. It startled me at first. My old clan was so small, we rarely shifted at the same time while apart, so the almost constant mental clan link felt strange to me.

Hey, new guy!

I thought it was Max, but wasn’t positive. Hey there.

You still snowed in? Lot of closed roads around us.

That’s why I was checking in. Are they starting to plow them at all?

Most of the secondary roads are clear, he said. Not sure about the backroads, though. Usually, they’re not touched at all.

That’s what I figured. I wonder if my truck can take them.

Haha. Give it a try, man! Four-wheel driving is always a good time.

I felt someone else shift in. I thought I sensed Cooper, but I was still getting to know my clan.

Hey, Max. Quinton. How’s everyone?

Trying to see if I can get my guest home for Christmas, I answered. They were well aware of the Vanessa situation, and I’d kept them updated on…well, most of the details. I’d left out the whole sleeping-with-her-and-possibly-falling-for-her part, though.

In your truck? I think you might be able to.

After talking with them, I felt more confident. But also saddened. I wasn’t sure what would come next for Vanessa and me. We’d just spent two and a half weeks together and had slept together more than once. Did that mean we were in some kind of relationship? Or was it just a blizzard fling?

I felt like I’d made some kind of progress emotionally, but I didn’t know if it would be permanent or not. It might have just been another side effect of being snowed in for days on end. All I knew is that it felt nice having her around. And more importantly, it didn’t feel like cheating. It didn’t feel like my marriage to Jessica had felt, either. It was its own thing, and, I thought, a good thing. Maybe. The hope was still fragile, but it was there.

I had breakfast cooking when she woke up. She padded into the kitchen and gave me a peck on the cheek before getting sugar for her coffee. She wore only panties, and I had to force myself to focus on the eggs.

“Aren’t you cold?” I asked.

She gave me a seductive smile. “It’s worth it, don’t you think?”

“Not if you want to eat.”

She disappeared into the bedroom and returned dressed. We started to eat, but I was preoccupied with our impending separation—and the delicate conversation we needed to have.

“What’s going on?” she asked.

How did she always know? “I’m just tired.”

“Did you have nightmares?”

“Always. But none that woke me last night.
